Why are there two different kinds of Lego?

I've been getting into Lego as I've gotten older, and I've noticed I enjoy the normal bricks over the newer flat ones. I've also noticed most themed sets have normal bricks, but most of the newer sets don't.<br><br>What is the difference between the two kinds and why is there two?
