tldr: last year my dad witnessed a murder on Zoom, that he’s sure was real.

Two years ago my dad reconnected with a friend- former neighbour he had in the village he lived in around 1985. This man is a few years older than him and was always a bit of a narcissist. But they had many decent conversations and my dad was happy to have found a buddy he could talk to about his experiences from back in the day.

They would often have zoom chats, my dad would sit on the couch in the living room and hold his iPad up while this friend showed off his house and car and then talked about things they remembered from back in the day.

One day my dad is telling me about a very odd thing that happened. During one of their zoom calls my dad is sitting on the couch holding his iPad in front of him as per usual. His friend is showing off his house and car things in his life, and in the middle of it all he says: “Oh no not again.” And suddenly there is a terrible noise and a lot of blood and he falls backward.

My dad is convinced it was a murder. He was shocked and called the police over there and told them what happened. And then he got a call back saying that the man was fine and that it was just a prank. But my dad could swear it was real.

My dad has been convinced that it wasn’t a prank, and that his friend faked his own death. His friend has no criminal record and they never had any issues. But in all the calls after that incident they never talked about what happened. We haven’t heard from him since. But since the incident my dad has been plagued with bad thoughts of death and murder, and he’s not the same man I knew.
