I’m 15 and my sister is 13. We both have autism.

She goes “I’ve gained weight, haven’t I?” and I say “are you?”
“I don’t know. I feel like I am. Do you know anything about calories? Maybe you can help.”

I say “I really don’t know. Let’s ask our friend.”

I ditched my phone so I can’t ask the voice assistant.

I say “Oh, but you want to know what I know. This is about self-esteem and I’m your brother and you don’t like talking to other people, that’s why.”

I say to her “well I think … we all have different genetics. So we can’t work out how many calories we need by comparing ourselves to others. How many calories you need really only depends on you. So you can either lose fat or gain muscle even if you eat the same amount of calories.”

She gets upset. “So you do know something. You’re just being sarcastic.”

I say, “I know nothing. If I knew anything, I would have helped you. I said that because I don’t want to give you wrong information. The only time I use calories is to determine whether a certain food is healthy. The other day I saw these protein bars that had 1000 calories per protein bar. But it's actually a snack. I wouldn’t want to eat it. But I wouldn’t know how many calories I need. And I wouldn’t know how many calories you need even if I knew how many calories I need. So anyone can eat 1000 calories because it's actually a relatively normal amount of calories for a snack. But as a meal, I would have to know how many calories I need in a meal. Maybe a meal is more or less than that. And maybe you would need more or less than me. So we would have to know how many calories a certain amount of energy is. But it’s not that simple. How much calories we need depends on our genetics and environment. But how much energy we need depends on the activity. So you would have to know how many calories is needed for each activity. But it's actually based on the amount of time we do that activity. So you need to know the amount of calories per minute or per hour of an activity. So every activity has different calories. But then how much calories we need from that activity depends on how long we do that activity. So you really just need to know about time. But then this requires data. And I don’t know those numbers. I’m not smart enough to know. I said I know nothing because I really know nothing. I was trying to help you but I don’t know anything.”

She says “I can’t trust you. You have no sense.”

I say “I see. Well you can’t trust me. And I probably don’t have any sense. But I’m so sorry. What can I do to make it up to you?”

She says, “nothing.”

I go hug her and she doesn’t hug me back.
