I think the concept of AGI is a myth

I’ve recently started to believe that the concept of AGI as is popularly discussed is a myth. By that I mean the idea that a single piece of software can be created that can do anything a human can do when given computing power. I also think that we are stuck in this idea that an algorithm exists such that we can write the operating system for AGI, plug in all of human knowledge, plug in enough computing power, and voilà, there it is, AGI. I believe that the brain / nervous system is a lot more complex than that. Yes, our understanding of biology has expanded significantly in recent years, but the more we learn, the more complex human biology seems. I believe that AGI as it is vaguely defined will never come to fruition.

I think about all of the claims that have been made by AI companies in recent years, and none of them have been realized. I think about the enormous progress that has been made in recent years in many fields of AI, and the fact that we have been told that AGI is just around the corner, yet we have seen no evidence of it. I think about how the idea that one piece of software can be written that can do everything a human brain can do is just utterly ridiculous. The fact that so many people believe in this seems to me to be a testament to how little people understand the human brain.

And sure, I guess I’m just some crazy person on the internet with no credentials, but I would bet money on the idea that AGI as it is popularly discussed is a myth.
