How do people keep their clothes in good condition

I know I'm about to sound like a 12 year old that has never washed a shirt in their life but.... how does quality clothing stay quality? I've never been able to keep anything for years. And I'm not talking about a little wear and tear, I mean full on holes and tears.

I have a couple of jumpers that I bought a little over a year ago. One is a woolen one from the British high street store John Lewis, the other is a merino wool one from a new company that claims to be sustainable. Both are a decent thickness and a nice quality.

I have worn them maybe around 10 times max and the John Lewis one has already started to get holes in. The merino wool one is fine but I'm sure after another year or so it will be heading for the bin too. I don't over wash or dry them, I don't wear them every day. I've worn similar jumpers over and over again and yet they still manage to just fall apart.

I've had my mum tell me to stop wearing jumpers because I wreck them, I've had people stare at me because of the holes in my clothes, I just don't get how everyone else keeps their clothes looking good long term. I do hand wash them sometimes but I don't see how the washing machine would cause this kind of damage.

I'm sick of being able to predict the demise of a new top or dress just because I know I'll ruin it somehow. I don't want to be that person that just destroys everything they own.
