I've been reading more and more about the situation in Israel. I previously couldn't understand why so many Palestinians wanted to go back to Israel. After all, thousands of Jews were kicked out of Palestine (now Israel) and had to escape to other countries. No one really helped them.

But after reading more about the situation, I understand that it is not that easy. I once read a story about a baby who was born on a plane over the ocean.

"Just imagine this baby. Which country is that baby from?" The baby is born on a plane. Then border control asks where the baby was born. "Over the ocean." "They weren't from the country where the flight took off, and they weren't from the country where the flight landed. So where was the baby born?"

The same thing applies to this story:

A Arab Israeli woman was having a baby while she was on the subway to work. The baby was born on the subway. After nine months of waiting, the woman could finally hold her child. She was so happy. That was until the police asked where the baby was born. "On the subway." The police wanted to know if the baby was born in Israel or Palestine. "We were on the subway, between Israel and Palestine." "So the child was born in Palestine. It's a Palestinian citizen." "But we live in Israel." "If the child was born in Palestine, then they are Palestinian."

This story caused me to look deeper into the matter. Arabic Israelis are treated very poorly in Israel. One example of this is that the government in Israel has laws for where the Palestinians can live. And where they cannot live. For example, if a Palestinian wants to marry an Israeli, then they cannot marry. But if a Palestinian woman marries an Israeli man, she cannot live with him.

And then there's all of the checkpoints. There are a lot of checkpoints between Israel and Palestine. A lot of Palestinians are stopped at these checkpoints. Including Palestinian women who want to give birth in Israel. These women cannot give birth in Palestinian hospitals, because of a lack of equipment and care. So a lot of Palestinian women try to get to Israeli hospitals to give birth.

But they aren't allowed to go through the checkpoints. And if they have to wait for hours at the checkpoints, the Palestinian women can give birth at the checkpoints. The women are then forced to give birth on the checkpoint. And if the baby is born before they are let through, then they are Palestinian. And the women cannot live with their husbands in Israel.
