I'm talking about when someone makes an OC that's the same race/gender as the canonical love interest for one of the other characters. They then make the canonical love interest fall for the OC instead (usually to make the reader think that the canonical love interest has moved on), and they make the relationship between the OC and canonical love interest end with the canonical love interest breaking up with the OC and the OC going insane and trying to hurt the canonical love interest's new love interest.

This usually happens because the canonical love interest is in the way of the reader insert/OC and a character because the canonical love interest is already dating or otherwise attached to the character.

This is a horribly overused trope that makes the characters look like they have no common sense whatsoever.

Let me give you a personal example I got:

The character in question is Nia Teppelin from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. In the actual show, she's Simon's girlfriend and she's the smart and confident girl.

Now, in the fanfiction that I read,
1. The author made Nia and Simon break up almost immediately, with Nia giving a really OOC reason for breaking up.
2. Nia started dating an OC, who was a black girl and she was the same personality as Nia (smart and confident) but she was more "sassy" and "spunky".
3. Nia found Simon's dead body in one of the scenes (it was a time travel fic), and "moved on" from him.
4. She started thinking about Camelle, the OC that she was dating, and she ended up breaking up with her because Camelle was acting weird and clingy.
5. Camelle was shown to be talking to some of the other characters and she was making fun of the way that Nia talked (Nia is from the moon and has a weird way of talking) and she was making fun of Nia's height.
6. Nia found out that Camelle was talking badly about her behind her back and she called Camelle out on it. Camelle tried to say that Nia's height was making everyone uncomfortable and Nia realized that she needed to break up with Camelle.
7. Camelle became really clingy and possessive towards Nia.
8. Kamina (Simon's friend) convinced Nia to tell Camelle that she couldn't be with her because Simon needed her.
9. Nia tells Camelle that she needs to be with Simon and Camelle says that Simon is dead, and Nia says that she's going to be with "Simon's spirit" (I swear to God this is what it said).
10. Camelle tries to fight Nia and Nia in self-defense kicks Camelle down a flight of stairs.
11. Camelle ends up in the hospital and Nia is told that Camelle is dead.

Then it ended up with Camelle dying in the hospital and Nia crying because she thought she killed Camelle.

It was honestly disgusting, and Nia, Simon, and Camelle were all written horribly.

Please, for the love of God, do not do this in your writing. I don't care if you hate Nia, you should not write her as a completely different character, or make the characters look like they have no common sense.

This is honestly disgusting and I recommend that nobody in this sub should do this in their writing unless they want to look like an idiot.

Edit: Holy crap this blew up. Thank you all for the feedback. I'll make sure to not write like this in my own writing.
