I (M/40) am married to my wife "Kathy" (F/38) and we have two girls ages 5 and 6. My parents passed away a few years back, but my brother and his family live in the area.

We have an annual Christmas party at our place every year since it has the most space. Before the party we sent out a group text asking everyone to bring their favorite snack or appetizer to share. Later on the same day my sister-in-law texted stating that she will be bringing a veggie platter.

At the party, Kathy had made 2 veggie platters and 1 cheese board. When my sister-in-law arrived with her veggie platter, Kathy was pretty upset and took it outside. I went outside to ask what was going on and she said "why did you tell her to bring a veggie platter! I already made 2." I was quick to apologize saying it was clearly a miscommunication. It was actually my brother that told her to bring the veggie platter because he knew Kathy made the other two. As we were talking my sister-in-law and brother came outside and listened to Kathy rant and complain. She insisted that my sister-in-law bring the veggie platter back to her house.

Fast forward to later in the party, my brother and sister-in-law gave all of the adults gift cards to a local steak house. They gave the kids each $100 cash and some LEGOs. Kathy was very quiet during the whole exchange. She didn't even say thank you or acknowledge the gift at all.

A few days after Christmas, my brother called asking if we had a chance to go to the steak house yet. Kathy answered the phone and said "not yet, but we will soon!" Then she told my brother that she will be returning the LEGOs to Target since they aren't really into LEGOs. I was in the room and started shaking my head but it was too late. My brother said "Oh?" And then she went on to say "yeah, we will probably buy them a Barbie dream house instead." My brother was pretty annoyed, but thanked her for letting him know and said he would talk to me later.

When he called me back he let me know that the LEGOs were a little more than your average set and cost him $40 a piece. I told him I would take care of it and the girls will absolutely play with them. When I told Kathy what he said she got very defensive and said that she doesn't like the idea of LEGOs in her house. She also told me that we will be returning the gift cards to Target and buying myself a gift card to Home Depot instead. I told her that I don't want to insult my brother and sister-in-law and she said "I don't give a shit what they think." I told her "if that's how you feel then you will be returning all of the gifts and not accepting anymore gifts from my side of the family." She said "good, don't bother inviting them to anything anymore either." I told her "fine, but this is the last time you disrespected my family." She said "I don't give a fuck about your family."

It's been a week and she has been packing up all of their gifts and cards. I told her that I will take the girls to stay with my mom for a week and while we are gone she can mail out all of the gifts. I also told her that after the party we aren't speaking to my brother and sister-in-law anymore.

AITA?
