Was Napoleon really short, or was that a British lie?

I find it very hard to believe that a man without any formal military training that only managed to get to college because of a royal scholarship went on to conquer Italy before his 27th birthday. Yet Napoleon did, and it's said that it was because he didn't get any careers that suited his height.
