I didn’t expect my freshman year of college to end up like this.

It wasn’t the worst year. I was lucky enough to have a decent scholarship and a part time job to get me through it. My boyfriend, Bryce, also made it easier. His family was wealthy, so he could afford to spend money on us without worrying about it. He took me out on nice dates, drove a beautiful sports car, and he never said no to buying me food.

But the one thing he couldn’t buy was love.

I met Bryce my senior year of high school. He was a few years older, and he was a senior when I was just a freshman. We met through a mutual friend and, somehow, just clicked. He asked me out on a date, and we went to the movies. He was so charming and kind, I think I fell for him right then and there.

But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t seem to get him to feel the same way.

When my senior year rolled around, I was struggling to find scholarships. His family offered to pay for my college if I continued to date him, but I refused. I broke up with him.

But, a year later, when I was in college and struggling to make ends meet, he came back around. I agreed to go out with him, and eventually we went back to dating.

When he picked me up from my dorm, he noticed how pale I was and how baggy my clothes were. He asked if I was okay, and I tried to lie to him. But he knew better.

“Eat something,” he said, and he took me to a nice restaurant.

I tried to protest, but he wouldn’t let me.

“You look like you need it.”

I couldn’t deny it. I hadn’t eaten a full meal in weeks.

He ordered steak and shrimp, plus appetizers. He ordered me a burger and fries, a milkshake, and dessert.

He offered to pay my tuition if I went back to dating him. I agreed.

It was too good to resist.

But, no matter how much he spent on me, I still couldn’t get him to love me.

I could tell by the way he looked at other girls. I could tell by the way he looked at me.

I was an option, a choice, not love.

Sometimes, I thought it would be better to just break up with him. But, every time I considered it, he would show up and take me out, buy me food, and say all the right things.

He was so charming.

But, in reality, he was just buying me, and I knew it.

But, when my mom ended up in the hospital, I didn’t even have enough money to fill up my gas tank.

Bryce drove me to the hospital, and he stayed with me.

“She needs a transplant,” the doctor said. “You two are a match. You can donate your organs to her.”

I agreed, not even thinking about it. My mother was dying. I had to save her.

But, when Bryce heard, he stopped me.

“I’ll pay for her transplant,” he said, and he took out his wallet.

But the doctor declined.

“She needs the organs now,” he said. “It’ll take time to get in touch with a donor. She won’t make it.”

“I’ll pay you to do it,” Bryce said.

But the doctor declined again.

“She won’t make it,” he said.

Bryce stepped outside, and I followed him.

“Let me donate the organs,” I said.

He looked at me.

“Why?” he asked.

“Because my mother is dying.”

He thought about it for a moment.

“How much money do you think your organs are worth?” he asked.

I shrugged.

“How did you intend to pay for the transplant?” I asked.

“I was going to ask my uncle for the money, but only if you agree to do something for me.”

I narrowed my eyes.

“What?”

“My uncle needs a new liver. I need you to sell yours to him. You get the money, I get my uncle a new liver, and I pay for your mother’s transplant with the money.”

I was taken aback.

“Why does your uncle need a new liver?”

“He drank too much.”

I scoffed.

“You want me to give my organs to an alcoholic?”

“Yes, I do.”

I thought about it.

If I donated my organs to my mother, she could live, but she would still have medical bills. If I sold my organs to his uncle, I could use the money to pay for the transplant.

“Fine,” I said.

“How much do you want for it?”

I thought about it.

“Whatever it is, you’ll pay for my mother’s transplant, and you’ll delete all the debt I have accumulated?”

“Yes, deal.”

“Ok, whatever it is, you’ll pay for my mother’s transplant, and you’ll delete all the debt I have accumulated?”

“Yes.”

I smiled.

“Then I want whatever it is, plus the value of my car, the value of your car, the value of your house, and the value of my student loans.”

He smiled back.

“Deal.”

I went back into the hospital and donated my liver to Bryce’s uncle. Bryce paid for my mother’s transplant, and he paid off my debt.

But he never loved me like I loved him.

I sold my organs to pay for his uncle’s transplant, but he didn’t love me anyway.
