Is this a possible kidnapping attempt?

So this happened yesterday at work. I’m a server at a sports bar/restaurant, and when it’s slow I do what’s called a sweep of tables and entirely focus on making sure everything is cleaned up and nothing is out of order. I usually do it in the same order, and yesterday was no exception.

I start by sweeping the bar area, and then I make my way around the dining room. I go clockwise around the dining room, which is unique because it’s split into two large sections by a wall that runs down the middle and is missing on one end. It’s also shaped in a large circle, so I figure going clockwise around the dining room is the most efficient way to do it, since I end where I started.

So I’m doing my usual sweep and I’m in the last section of the dining room, closest to the door, and as I’m wiping down a recently cleaned table two men sit in the booth directly behind this entirely clean table and say “how long will it be before someone comes to take our order?” And I explain I can take their order, but I’m not actually their server. It’s clear they’re being purposeful, as I have my name tag on, and I don’t think I was blocking their view of the ground too much, so they should have been able to see the name tag of their server stitching on the table they’re sitting at.

So I ask them if they need anything, and they respond that the only thing they need is a menu. So before I hand them one, I ask if they would like waters or anything to drink, which they say yes to. So I bring them waters, menus, and I ask a few questions like how many people will be in the party and what their day is like so far, just to be nice. And as I’m asking these questions, they respond super short and generally seem to be in a hurry, so I figure they’re just in a bad mood and leave it at that.

This was at 4:15 PM. So now it’s 4:40 and I’m back in the bar area sweeping and one of my coworkers comes up to me and asks me if I saw a couple come in without a server. I inform them that there were clearly two men sitting in the section they work in, and my coworker immediately responds with “you helped them, what happened?” And I explain what happened, and my coworker is extremely confused and says that they took the order for Table 47, and that they were the two men I helped earlier. He then asks if I noticed anything strange about them, and I say not really they just seemed in a bad mood. Then he tells me that they seemed very suspicious. He said whenever he would go to check on them, they would be speaking in a different language, and that they both were wearing sunglasses inside. He then asks if I noticed the two men who were constantly walking by the dining room and looking inside. He asks me if I think these two men could have been the same men I helped earlier, and I say that I don’t think they were because the two walking around were actually women, I remember seeing their hair and dresses as they walked by. But he seemed very suspicious of the whole thing, and informed me that he’s going to tell management about it.

THIS IS WHERE IT GETS WEIRD. I continue about my day, I’m in the front of house, and he’s in the back, so we can’t communicate unless we’re both in the same place at the same time. So I’m in the back grabbing some refills for a table, and management is in the server area, which is in the center of the restaurant. As I’m walking through, management is talking about the tables at issue. They’re talking about how the two women who were walking by the dining room the whole time were the ones who ordered, and how the two men who were sitting at the table were just-random men who walked in off the street and stole the order for their table.

Apparently there was a table of two men that came in right before closing, but instead of being seated they just walked into the dining room and sat down at a table. The hostess immediately went to go inform them they need to be seated by a server, but when she walked into the dining room, there was a table of two men already sitting there. And the two men who walked in provided the hostess with the order number of the table that had already been sat. She then said that the two men sitting at the table said they ordered already, and they just wanted to wait for the food to come out. So the hostess just took the order number and went back to the stand, and then she realized that she had just been fooled, and that the two men who just sat down were actually the original order, and the two men who provided the order number were the ones who had been sitting there the whole time.

I don’t know what to make of it, and management was stumped. We’re still in the process of looking at the security footage, but I’m so confused about what they could have been doing. Was this some kind of kidnapping? A money laundering scheme? I don’t even know what to think, and it just hasn’t made sense to me. My manager and I were talking about it, and I said it was so weird, and my manager said “yeah that’s weird, huh?” And I said “weird? Its fucking baffling.” But thank god it didn’t seem to pan out for them, because the two men who came in last ordering food for the table of two men who were already sitting there ended up leaving about five minutes after that, and entirely empty handed.

But yeah, let’s not meet again.
