Going back to 80s anime is like getting off a bad fixer-upper of a relationship.

So I saw a bit of nostalgia post here about 80s anime on a post, and it made me think of my own nostalgia for it. I loved 80s anime as a kid. Akira blew my fucking mind. Then Macross came along and really opened up my eyes. Nausicaa was amazing. And so much other shit. It was like the way the animation flowed and the characters moved and the music just *felt* fucking right.

I got off the anime train for a while because it all seemed like the same tired bullshit, but I've been on a bit of a kick to go back and watch some old shit that I heard was good back in the day but never saw.

Going back to 80s anime is like getting off a bad fixer-upper of a relationship.

I'm not sure what it is about 80s anime, but when I watch it, it really just *feels good*. Like, its not even about the plot at a certain point for me. Its about the way the goddamn animation looks and the music and the fucking *vibe*. The way characters and objects and lighting all move, the way voices sound and the way everything else flows just has this fucking magic to it that I'm not seeing in modern anime.

The last thing I just watched was the OVA for "Area 88". There really isn't much of a plot in it. Its your typical "war is bad" thing, but that doesn't even really matter. Its about the way the atmosphere hits and the characters flowed in the limited screen time they had. The fucking soundtrack in it gave me fucking goosebumps at times. The animation was damn good for 1985.

You can tell that the people that worked on it all put their fucking hearts into it. Everyone from the voice actors to the actual animation team to the music team. You just can't replace that with modern 3d animation and whatever modern plastic bullshit they call an "anime soundtrack" these days.

And the other thing that's so jarring about it is seeing how much these shows were focused on a visual and auditory experience. The goddamn music and animation were so fucking good and damn near everything 100% about atmosphere and immersion. Everything else was secondary. I can't even explain it. I just know that modern anime is completely lacking in it, and that modern anime misses it completely.

I can't explain it. But if you want to know what I mean, go fucking watch some 80s anime. I don't care what. Just go watch some fucking Akira or Macross or Nausicaa. Anything. It won't even matter what, really. Just watch it.
