My wife is very very scared of guns. She had a very traumatic experience with a gun during her childhood (a friend accidentally shot somebody and killed them). She is terrified of having a gun in our house. She is terrified to learn how to shoot a gun. The only solution I can think of is for me to learn and have the gun locked up and out of sight and only taken out when she is away and tell her I have it in a safe.

To be clear, I do not maintain my guns how they do in the movies. I dont have a gun just laying on the night stand. It's not leaning up in the corner of every room. They are locked up when not in use. But she is terrified of the possibility of having a gun in the house. I'm starting to wonder how this will play out for me in the future if she never starts to be ok with owning a gun.

I'm a 27 year old law abiding citizen with 4 brothers and a sister (no sisters). I shoot guns in my free time. I'm a USMC vet. I love guns, not just for the protection aspect, but also for the sport. I hunt and target shoot when I have the means to. My wife of 3 years is petrified of the idea of owning a gun. I know shes not alone in this.

I understand there are plenty of other things I can use in self defense, pepper spray, knives, really anything hard, but there is just something about having a firearm that makes us as humans feel safe. I love my wife very very much, and I will do anything to keep her safe, but I dont think it's fair for me to have to give up every hobby I enjoy just because of her irrational fear. I do plan on pursuing therapy with her in hopes that the therapist can help her work through her fear.

How would you handle this situation?
