I'm so glad I got hit by a car

I'm posting this in vent because I'm not sure what type of feedback I would get from other subs. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by the positive experience I had with human nature and I need to express it before my heart bursts. I'm not good with words so I apologize in advance.

Three months ago I was riding a skateboard trying to cross an intersection when a car ran a red light and knocked me unconscious. I woke up in the emergency room. When the police showed up to take my statement, they told me that everyone stuck around to give their statements including the guy that hit me. I'm not sure how bad the car was damaged but it must have been bad because I broke the windshield. Thankfully there's no bad blood between us and he was more worried about me than anything.

Fast forward to when I was released from the hospital. The nurse told me that my hospital bill was going to be huge. We're talking "I need to declare bankruptcy and move into my parents basement" huge. I was terrified. Thankfully there was surveillance footage of the accident and the police said they could get me the footage to submit it to my insurance company to help with the bills.

Over the next two months I was back and forth with the police and the city trying to get the footage. It seemed like they were giving me the run around. They wanted me to give them a time stamp and location of where I was hit so they could look up the footage. They said it was a week-by-week video feed and they would have to manually look through every camera in the area.

I knew exactly where and when the incident occurred but that didn't seem good enough for them. I thought I was fucked.

Then, out of nowhere a detective calls me and lets me know that they found footage of the accident but they won't let me see it. Told me that they would only give it to my lawyer. I'm not made of money and I have no experience with lawyers so I told him I would call my lawyer.

Lo and behold, the same detective calls me 2 weeks later and lets me know that they received my claim from my insurance company and they would let me know if they needed anything else from me.

I received a call yesterday letting me know that my claim was approved and they wouldn't be charging me a penny for anything. I was beyond relieved.

I received a call from the detective a few hours later letting me know that they dropped the charges against the guy who hit me and that they found footage of the incident. It was a camera across the street from the accident that recorded me the whole time. The camera showed me trying to cross the street for almost 6 minutes before the car hit me. I got to see the footage and it was crazy. If I had tried to cross the street 30 seconds sooner, I would be dead or in a coma.

Having to deal with all of this has been a massive burden. I'm still recovering from the accident and I don't feel like myself. I'm hoping the feeling will pass soon.

I'm glad I got hit by a car.

Edit: Wow, this blew up. I'm trying to reply as best I can but it's a bit overwhelming. Thank you all for the comments and awards. This didn't happen exactly as I typed it because I'm trying to keep identities out for privacy but this is the basic idea of what happened. I'm still in shock by all of this and it's nice to know that I'm not the only ones that thinks this is crazy.
