My (26F) boyfriend (27M) spent 2 weeks of our vacation with his ex instead of me

Some backstory: My boyfriend and I have been together for almost 3 years. We both love to travel, and this year we booked a trip to another country. The trip was supposed to last 4 months and we planned this trip for 1.5 years. We both quit our jobs to travel, sold our house and everything we owned so we spent every penny on this trip. <br>We were supposed to spend these four months together but after 6 weeks my boyfriend said he wanted to break up. We had a huge fight in our hostel room and split up. I stayed in the hostel and continued my trip. I was very sad but keen on exploring the country. I met a lot of people and made new friends. Two months passed and I was doing fine. I was invited to a party hosted by some people I met at the hostel. My boyfriend was also there and we talked. Turns out he also missed me and he wanted to be together again. We made up and continued the trip together. <br><br>Another two weeks passed and we booked a rental car to explore the country with. We parked the rental car in a parking lot and put a note on the car that we loved her and would take good care of her. After 2 days the owner called and yelled at us for scratching the car. She demanded 5000 USD for it. We offered to fix the scratch ourselves but she refused, then offered to get it fixed at a body shop but she also refused. We told her that we had to travel on and she said she would have to call the police if we didn’t pay her 5000 USD. We told her we couldn’t pay her that much, she said we were thieves. She then called the police and they demanded our passports. We gave them our passports and they said we wouldn’t get our passports back until we pay 5000 USD. We told them we couldn’t pay her that much and asked to go to court. They said it would take 3 months to go to court but they would keep our passports until then and that we can’t leave the city until court. <br><br>My boyfriend then said he wanted to go to court but I told him it was too absurd to pay 5000 USD for a scratch. I didn’t think the car was worth that much. We were about to pay her when my boyfriend said he wanted to call an insurance company first. The insurance company told him that they would give us legal advice for 70 USD. He paid for it and they asked him a bunch of questions. After that he said he talked to them and they told him that it was most likely a scam. Apparently rental car owners mark their cars in different colors and claim they were scratched or damaged to extort money from their customers. They said they would send an expert to inspect the car and we would be able to pay only for the actual damage. My boyfriend said this would only take a few hours and that we could pay then. He told the owner but she said she didn’t want to get the car inspected by an expert. I told her that we can’t pay her that much but she also refused to go to court. I was so mad and asked what she wanted then. She said she would give us our passports back if we paid her 5000 USD. I said this was absurd and she said she wasn’t going to call the police again. I said I would report this to the police then, and she said I could do whatever I want. I was so angry and I called the police again. They said they didn’t have time for us and that we should just pay her. I asked them to send another police officer but they said no one was available at the moment. <br><br>After that my boyfriend told me that he was going to stay with the rental car owner. I was surprised and asked him if he was serious. He said yes and that he needed to take care of this. I told him this was so ridiculous and that I couldn’t believe him. He said I was being dramatic and that he needed to take care of this. I told him I couldn’t wait any longer, I needed to continue the trip because I couldn’t stay in a city forever. He told me to go and he would catch up with me later. I was so confused and asked him how long it was going to take. He said he didn’t know but he wanted to stay until it was resolved. I told him I already met another person and he was mad at me. I told him that I couldn’t wait any longer and that I needed to move on. <br><br>Did I do something wrong? Was it wrong for me to not wait for my boyfriend? <br><br>EDIT: I told him that he was ridiculous, I couldn’t wait forever for him to get our passports back. I asked him to let me go to court with him but he also refused. He said “I don’t want you here, go wherever you want and I don’t need your help”. I was surprised because I thought it wouldn’t take him that long to get our passports back. I asked him why it took him 2 weeks to get them back. He said that the insurance company came after a week and solved the problem. I asked him why he stayed with her for another week then. He said he already stayed for a week so he decided to stay another week and hang out with her. I told him this was ridiculous because I was waiting for him for a month and he stayed with her for 2 weeks for no reason. He said he already stayed for a week and he wanted to spend more time with her. I asked him if he still had feelings for her or if something happened between them. He said nothing happened and that he didn’t love her anymore. I told him this was ridiculous and that I couldn’t believe him.
