I’ve noticed over the past year or so this sub has gotten more and more pessimistic of AGI occurring in the near future.

In part, I feel the pessimism is justified. My timeline for AGI has certainly expanded. I think the biggest challenge to overcome for AGI is interpretability. We won’t see AGI until interpretability is better understood. And that’s not close. Maybe it’s 10 years away. But the negativity on this sub goes beyond that. I think that negativity is unhealthy, especially for people who have committed a large portion of their life to the pursuit of AGI.

The negativity is harmful. It makes people question their own goals. It makes them question their own sanity. It makes them second guess the decisions they have made in their life. It’s interesting to see people who have dedicated their life to AGI try to explain away their decision making. They didn’t. They made a mistake. And that’s fine. People make mistakes.

This sub has moved toward a cult-like mentality. People who don’t have the same pessimism as the majority are called names and downvoted. Their sanity is questioned. This is not a healthy environment.

I’m not sure why the pessimism on this sub has grown. It might be because people are seeing cracks in the AGI timeline they believed in.

I think I have a good idea why the AGI timeline is growing.
