I went to a women’s gym, and the culture is so fucked up

Just a few observations I made. I’m impressed by how many of our boys went to the gym today.

I went to a women’s only gym. I found it by chance when I was driving one day. I was working from home most of the time back then and it was more convenient than driving to a gym that was ~40 minutes away each day. I kept going and I found that I felt more comfortable there as I didn’t have to deal with gym rats or pick-up artists.

I’ve kept going to that gym, and it’s now ~25 minutes away. I enjoy the people as they are genuine and the gym is family-owned. I’ve recently noticed that more men are going there.

My logic was that a woman’s only gym is pretty much the same as a regular gym but less crowded and with less gym rats. This logic also applies to men. Women who go to a women’s only gym are often there for the same reasons.

While I wouldn’t go out of my way to a women’s only gym, I appreciate the benefits. Low gym fees, less crowded, and less gym rats.

I have previously said that I’m not being sexist or misogynistic, but that my focus has shifted from removing anything female from my life to avoiding anything “gym rat-like.” And since gym rats are usually men, I go to a women’s-only gym for the same reason.

There is an open, communal locker room. There are ~10 showers in the locker room. There is ~20 lockers. It’s pretty much the same as a locker room in a typical gym. I’ve never seen a woman change in the locker room - they change in the stalls.

Women just walk around topless in the locker room. No one cares. I stopped changing in the stalls almost immediately. I’m not too worried about body image, but I’m not confident enough to change openly. And I have no interest in looking at other women’s bodies.

I’ve never seen a woman lift anything heavier than ~40 pounds. Even with this, they ask for a spotter. Most of the women are doing isolation exercises like leg curls and shoulder presses with 5 pound dumbbells.

I’ve never seen a woman working out with her hair down. They put it up and don’t care if it’s frizzy after their workout.

There is an absolute lack of pick-up artists. I’ve only seen one guy who was a gym rat. I see him once a week, at most. I don’t know him well enough to tell him he’s not welcome.

I’ve never seen a woman wear a crop top or booty shorts. Most of the women are wearing baggy t-shirts and sweatpants. I’ve never seen a woman working out with makeup on (but perhaps it just looks natural). I’ve never seen a woman with a full face of makeup at the gym.

There’s no sexism or misogyny here. I don’t think that women are better than men. I just think that the gym culture is fucked up. It’s a terrible state of affairs when both men and women prefer going to a women’s only gym. It’s a terrible state of affairs when a woman’s only gym is now becoming coed as more men want to avoid the gym rat culture.

We all lost, men and women, by living in a society like this. And since women, as a gender, have been driving this social change, it’s their responsibility to fix it (but they won’t).

Edit: I don’t go to the locker room often but I’ve seen ~5-6 women walk around topless. I don’t look much but I’ve noticed that they don’t have implants. One of them had a nipple ring, and the others had unshaven armpits.
