The whole “this could never be made today” sentiment is wildly overstated

There’s a constant refrain on places like chambers that a lot of comedies from the 2000s couldn’t be made today because they’re “too divisive” or off color or whatever. I think this is massively overstated.

Things like Blazing Saddles couldn’t be made today, sure, but not because of the content. It’s because there hasn’t been a Mel Brooks or George Carlin or Richard Pryor in a long time. Things like The 40-Year-Old Virgin or Zoolander or Team America or Borat or Tropic Thunder could absolutely be made today if someone had the wit to do it.

Don’t confuse the lack of a genius with the lack of freedom.
