Having an existential crisis here.

Before we begin, I'll state my background. I'm a high school English teacher in the Chicago area. I've taught for about 25 years, have tenure, and seniority. I don't have any problems from an admin or parent perspective. My department is very easy going, supportive, and gets along. I enjoy the subject I teach and love the age group, and am still enthusiastic about teaching. I am financially comfortable.

But I'm just burnt out to the core. I don't know how much more I can handle of this career. I'm considering retirement this summer.

Here's my questions for those who have done it, that I have not been able to find answers for:

1.) How did you find adjusting to not being a part of the school cycle? That is, how easy or hard was it to stop thinking in terms of the school schedule--weekends, holidays, summer, etc.? Do you find yourself thinking in terms of the school year still?

2.) How did you keep to your schedule in terms of self-care, chores, and exercise? Did you find yourself just immediately sleeping in, staying in PJs all day, etc.? How did you avoid becoming a bum?

3.) How did you keep yourself occupied and engaged in meaningful activities? I'm dreading boredom.

4.) How did you deal with feeling a loss of identity? Did you regret it? How long did it take to feel comfortable in retirement?

I appreciate any advice, and you veteran teachers who have powered through. I am envious.
