The candidate I had to fire was my brother in law

Throwaway because my wife knows my main and I just can’t risk it.

She was unqualified for the position. I knew going in to the interview she was unqualified for the position. My wife begged me to give her a chance and my brother in law asked me to do him the same courtesy. He said he knew she was unqualified but thought getting her in the door was the first step and the rest would fall into place. He asked me to do him a solid and I said I would do everything I could (because my wife had already begged me anyway)

Well the interview went what I knew it would go. Extremely poorly. She could not answer a single question correctly. She was friendly and enthusiastic but did not know the first thing about the position we were hiring for. I let her go at the end of the interview and told her I would contact her one way or the other in 48 hours and she seemed understanding.

Later that day my wife called me at work and immediately started asking about the interview. I told her it went poorly and explained my reasons. She moaned and groaned and eventually asked me to just give her the damn job. I told her I couldn’t. I told her it’s not fair to the dozens of other applicants, and certainly not to the extremely qualified candidates we had already interviewed. I told her it also looks bad for my career. She continued to press the issue until I finally told her that if I gave her that job I doubt she could handle it. I told her it would be an embarrassment for her and a colossal failure. She told me that I’m doing this out of spite and that I never liked her (which is 100% true) and have never wanted to be close with her. I told her that’s not true, but she hung up before I could tell her why I didn’t like her (which is that she’s every shitstain stereotype you’ve heard of). I told her I didn’t like her because she was “too pretty” to be a secretaries assistant and I wanted someone who could handle more responsibility beyond moving my papers around.

She called back an hour later crying and begging me to give her the job. I told her my mind was made up and that I already put her name down in the no column. She asked me if there was anything she could do to change my mind. There was a brief pause before I said yes, tell me you can do the job better than anyone else. She said “of course I can” and I told her to tell me why. She couldn’t. I told her exactly, why would I ever hire someone who doesn’t know the material when there are dozens of applicants that do? I told her I understood the job would be a challenge to learn and overcome, but she didn’t even know the basic requirements of the job. I told her I’m not a teacher, it’s not my job to show her the way, it’s her job to prove to me why I’m making the right decision hiring her. Then the line went dead.

My brother in law called around an hour later. I told him the same thing I told his wife. He told me “She’ll fuck whoever it is you need her to to get the job. I told him that’s not how it works and every candidate goes through the same rigorous interview process. I told him my superiors get the final decision, not me, so it’s not just me who thinks she’s unqualified. He told me “your superiors will fuck whoever they need to if I pay them enough.” Again I told him that’s not how it works. He said “do you know who I am? I will have you fired and blackballed and I’ll make sure you never find a job again. I’ll ruin your career and your life over this shit.” I told him I knew exactly who he was. That I knew he was a piece of shit who thought he ran the fucking planet. I told him he didn’t run my company and the people who do would laugh at his pathetic threats.

He laughed maniacally and told me “watch your fucking back you fucking coward”

Then he hung up. Now I am genuinely afraid for my life and am expecting my boss to call me any minute informing me that I’m being let go.
