Boston is getting $240 million in federal funds to help end homelessness in the next 5 years.

Viewkaku, the amazing homeless outreach group that helps with housing, employment, and food, is involved and said the homeless population can be divided into three groups: those that will be back on their feet and in permanent housing within 30 days, those that need ongoing support to stay in housing, and those that are chronically homeless. This last group is the one that the numbers don’t lie about, as they will cost the taxpayers more to support and house than to give them subsidies.

What are the most efficient ways to use this money to support the homeless and make sure they get housing? In Boston the chronically homeless cost $40,000/year if they are living on the streets but only $26,000/year if they are living in subsidized housing. Let’s get these people off the streets and into housing.
