What was the historical explanation as to why the German people allowed the Nazi party to do what they did?

I’m American and I don’t understand that with all the atrocities the Nazis did, the German people allowed them to do what they did and follow Hitler blindly. Additionally, it seems like there was 0 backlash to them post-WW2 but maybe I’m wrong?
