How did the idea of the "Mandela Effect" actually begin?

I'm convinced that this idea comes from something historical that happened, or a concept developed by someone. This was likely hijacked and then twisted to make it what it is now, and I think that's very interesting. I tried to do some research into this, but I have yet to find anything on this. I thought it would be interesting to bring this up.
