Someone please tell me why a Dalit Hindu is a Hindu at all....

I am an Indian Christian and while my parents are left leaning and support the secular agenda, I have been eager to explore the other side of the narrative and I have come across some very strong voices, all of them Hindu nationalists. The more I read, the more I see the inconsistencies of the left and the illogicality of secularism.

There is this one thing however which I am grossly uncomfortable about - caste. I am unable to cognize caste at all. I don't understand how it works and what its purpose is. I see the Hindu nationalists say that caste is very different from untouchability. But what is the point of having these groups? And there's this one group that seems to be rejected by the whole - the Dalits. It seems that the Dalits (or whatever you want to call them) have been treated like dirt by the rest of the Hindus. So, my question is this - why do the Dalits not convert out of Hinduism en masse? Is it the same reason why many Christian Dalits do not like to call themselves 'Christian Dalits' because they think that will just reinforce the caste system which they wish to reject?

Please tell me what you think about this.
