The "red eye" flight is a scam.

I just had the most annoying travel experience and felt like I needed to share it with someone. So here I am. I am a Canadian and I am talking about flying from Canada to the United States.

I was flying from Vancouver to Phoenix. I would be departing at 11:30 PM and arriving in Phoenix at 2:35 AM local time. I am sure we have all heard of the "red eye" flight. Essentially, you board at night, find your seat, sit down, buckle up, finish take off, stand up, lay your seat back, close your eyes, and wake up after a few hours, and finish the flight. Well, my flight departed at 11:30 PM, but when I arrived at 2:35 AM, we taxied for 30 minutes, then we waited for a gate to free up for another 30 minutes, then I had to get my bag from baggage claim, then I had to catch an Uber (because public transit doesn't run at these hours) and get to my hotel and all of this doesn't happen until 4:30 AM.

But that is not all. Since my flight departed at 11:30 PM, check in time was at 8:30 PM, baggage drop off was at 9:00 PM and security was at 9:15 PM. Once all this and boarding was done, I was on the plane at 11:00 PM. From there, waiting to depart, taking off, taxiing, etc. didn't get me to my starting point of closing my eyes and sleeping until 12:15 AM. Then, in Phoenix, they started announcing that we were going to be landing at 2:35 AM, so we all had to wake up at 2:15 AM, which gave us only 2 hours to sleep during the "red eye" flight. So now I am in my hotel room, and I am writing this at 6:00 AM and I feel like a zombie.

So, essentially, my "red eye" flight gave me only 2 hours of sleep, which I could have done at home, and I can't even sleep in because I have plans today.

The "red eye" flight is a scam.
