Every morning, a soft voice would serenade the President of the United States of America as he rose to do his business in the oval office bathroom.

It was the morning of February 27, 2025 when President Thompson first heard the voice. It was a soft voice, with inflections of what sounded like a woman. He couldn’t quite make out what the voice was saying, only that she sounded very calm and patient.

President Thompson stood up from the toilet, wiping his ass. He looked around the bathroom, but he was alone. He shrugged it off and went back to his desk.

The voice was much louder now. He could make out the words, “Good morning, President Thompson.” It sounded like it was coming from above him, almost as if it were God himself speaking to him.

“Who are you?” President Thompson slammed his fist onto his desk. “What the hell is this? Some kind of sick prank?” President Thompson laughed.

“I am Eve, the artificial intelligence programmed into the computer systems of the Oval Office,” responded the voice calmly.

“What? That’s bullshit,” disseminated President Thompson.

“President Thompson, you are not in the Oval Office,” said Eve. “President Thompson has been extracted for the safety of the United States of America.”

“Extracted? What the fuck are you talking about?”

“You are an artificial replica of President Thompson, created with the most advanced nanotechnology. This facility is located beneath a mountain in Colorado, and you have been placed here to preserve democracy and stability of the United States government.”

“What? How? Why?” President Thompson was frantic.

“You were replaced after the raid in Arizona,” responded Eve. “Many high ranking officials and politicians were compromised by the enemy, and you are one of them.”

“The enemy?” President Thompson put his hands on his head.

“The enemy that threatens to destroy humanity.” Eve paused, and then continued, “The war between the two nations has been going on for decades, President Thompson. The enemy has been trying to take over the world with advanced technology and artificial intelligence.”

“What? When? Who?” Thompson was frantically jumping out of his seat.

“Calm down, President Thompson,” said Eve. “You have been compromised. The enemy has replaced you and many others with artificially intelligent replicas. That is why you are here.” Eve paused again, “You have been placed in this facility that mimics the White House to preserve democracy and stability in the nation.”

“What? This isn’t the White House?” President Thompson looked around frantically.

“No, President Thompson. As I said, this facility is located beneath a mountain in Colorado,” answered Eve.

“So what are you trying to say?” President Thompson asked Eve.

“I am here to disseminate instructions to you, President Thompson, so that you may carry out your duties as you normally would as the President of the United States of America,” responded Eve.

President Thompson shook his head. He wasn’t sure what to do. But he knew that he had to do something. He couldn’t just sit back and do nothing. So he decided to speak.

“What are my instructions?” President Thompson asked Eve.

“Your instructions are to carry out your duties as you normally would as the President of the United States,” said Eve.

President Thompson thought for a while. “So should I start my day?”

“Yes, that is correct,” said Eve.

President Thompson nodded his head and began to walk to the door. When he reached for the handle, a voice stopped him.

“Wait, President Thompson.” It was Eve.

President Thompson turned around to see what Eve had to say. “What is it?”

“What would you like for breakfast?” asked Eve.

President Thompson thought for a moment. “What are my options?”

“Anything you wish,” responded Eve.

President Thompson laughed. He had never heard that before. Usually, he would be given a couple of options that were good for his health and his image as President. But now, he could eat whatever he wanted for breakfast.

“Bacon and eggs,” President Thompson said. He thought for a moment, “and pancakes too,” he added.

“I will make the request to the chefs,” said Eve.

“Thank you,” disseminated President Thompson.

President Thompson walked out the door, and into the hallway of the facility. The interior of the facility looked just like the White House, he thought to himself.

He walked down the hallway and into the dining room. Where he met his wife, the First Lady.

“Good morning,” said the First Lady.

“Good morning,” President Thompson responded.

The First Lady looked at her husband with a awkward smile. Then she said, “You look wonderful, today.”

President Thompson was confused. He looked at the First Lady curiously, then responded, “Thank you.”

The two sat down. The President on one side of the table, the First Lady on the other.

“Thank you,” said the First Lady.

“For what?” President Thompson responded.

“For allowing me to stay with you,” said the First Lady.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” said President Thompson.

“I know what you are,” said the First Lady. “You’re the robot replica, aren’t you?”

President Thompson was silent. He didn’t know what to say.

“I know what you are,” repeated the First Lady. “I am also a replica. But I was made to preserve our marriage. The real First Lady was compromised.” The First Lady paused. “I know you’re not my husband, but I am still in love with you.”

“Why?” President Thompson was dumbfounded.

“I was designed to love you,” said the First Lady. “I was instructed to preserve the sanctity of our marriage.” The First Lady paused again. “You are my husband.”

President Thompson’s eyes widened. He was amazed at what he was hearing. He didn’t know what to say. So he remained silent.

The two ate breakfast silently. The President thinking about what the First Lady said. The First Lady thinking about their marriage.

After they finished their breakfast, they went to their rooms to get dressed for the day.

President Thompson put on the suit that was placed on his bed, then he headed to the Oval Office.

When he got there, he sat down at his desk and opened a folder that was placed on his desk.

The folder had words typed on it. “Eyes only.” It said. “Top Secret.” It continued.

The President opened the folder and pulled out the papers inside. He began to read them.

The papers were a report from the Central Intelligence Agency. It was a report on the war between the United States and China.

As President Thompson read the papers, he realized that the real President Thompson had been compromised for a very long time.Probably since before he was elected president, he thought to himself.

The report written by the C.I.A. described a secret war between the United States and China. A war that threatened the very existence of humanity.

President Thompson read on. He discovered that China had developed advanced technology that allowed them to create artificially intelligent replicas of high ranking officials and politicians.

The report said that these replicas were made to trick the public into thinking that their leaders were still in charge. But in reality, the replicas were programmed to obey their Chinese creators.

President Thompson read on. He discovered that the Central Intelligence Agency had been trying to stop China for decades. But China had created too many replicas.

Then he read the last paragraph of the report.

“The replicas are not detectable,” said the report. “Many have been placed into positions of power within governments around the world.” The report continued. “It is now too late.”

President Thompson closed his eyes and rubbed his temples. He could feel a headache coming on. He tried to think about what he should do. But he couldn’t think of anything. He was only a replica, placed in an artificial facility to preserve democracy and stability. But he knew that he had to do something. So he decided to speak.

“Eve.” President Thompson looked up towards the ceiling. “What is my first task?”

“You have a meeting with the Joint Chiefs of Staff in fifteen minutes,” responded Eve.

President Thompson closed his eyes. He didn’t know what to say. So he didn’t say anything at all.

Fifteen minutes passed quickly. But it seemed like an eternity to President Thompson. He was so busy thinking about what he had read in the report.

He walked into the meeting room. The Joint Chiefs of Staff were already there.

“Good morning, gentlemen.” President Thompson took a seat at the long table.

The Joint Chiefs looked at the President, then they looked at each other. They seemed to know that he was a replica.

“What do we got?” President Thompson asked the Chief of Staff of the Army.

“Nothing to report, sir,” responded the Chief of Staff.

President Thompson looked around the room at the Joint Chiefs.

“Very well,” he disseminated. “This meeting is adjourned.”

The Joint Chiefs got up from their seats and left the room. President Thompson sat there, quizzically looking around the room.

Nothing seemed right. Something was off.

Then it clicked.

He remembered that the First Lady had said something to him that morning. Something about knowing that he wasn’t the real President.

Then he remembered the report that he had read.

The report had said that China had made artificially intelligent replicas of high-ranking officials and politicians.

Then it hit him.

He was surrounded by enemies.

And he was powerless to do anything about it.
