I'm 45 years old and I've been watching anime for almost 30 years. Even back in the 90s, my friends were trading VHS tapes of Akira, Totoro, Perfect Blue, etc. I've always kept these things in secret, though. I've never openly admitted to liking anime until my late 20s/early 30s, and it was usually only to fellow gamers that I hung out with online. Even then, it was always under a guise of it being weird and nerdy, but also totally awesome, you know. Like, it's OK to like anime, but not too much.

Now, as an adult, I openly discuss this stuff, and I've converted a few of my friends into watching some shows, but I still don't have much to talk about with anyone except Gamers. I went to an anime con a few months ago and felt so weird about it. It was the first one I'd been to in about 5 years, and the last one I went to was with my then-girlfriend who I was already in a long-distance relationship with for about 5 years, and I felt really happy to be there. It was such a great experience, and I even spent a lot of money on stuff that I never use (Lolita dress, anime figurines, manga artbooks)...But this last time was different. I went alone, and I felt...so...old. Everyone was so young. The only other older people were the ones selling merchandise. I just made it through the con, got what I wanted, and left. I didn't even bother to check out any of the panels. It just felt...weird.

The only anime-related things I ever bring up around real people are video games and Studio Ghibli. That's it. I'll bring up stuff like this at work, and the responses are always "I've never seen it." It's not something you can easily discuss with non-otaku.
