I don't give summer reading homework

I teach 9th and 10th grade English. I love getting them used to a strict routine of reading and writing, I love sending home grades each night and all that jazz. BUT, I don't give any summer homework. That's right, I don't want to see them at all until school starts. In fact, I want to see their parents even less than that. I am a single mom with 3 kids of my own and I want to spend some time swimming with them, taking them to amusement parks and being a mom.

My 9th graders get a syllabus and a textbook on the last day of school. They don't get any contact from me until the night before school starts and they are expected to walk in knowing the rules and being prepared to work.

My 10th graders get none of that. I don't want to see them again until the first day of school, at which point they need to know the curriculum in and out and be ready to hit the ground running.

I usually have around 800 kids a year and my parents are super involved. I frequently get calls asking me to give more work, make it more challenging, give more homework, etc. So it's refreshing to say that this part of the year, they can just go f off.
