Using ChatGPT 3.5 for school has ruined my relationship with my girlfriend (long post)

This post is about my own university experience using GPT 3.5 for a single subject. GPT 3.5 was used in addition to manually written notes. <br><br>To give a bit of background: I'm a 22 yo male senior at a top 20 university in the United States. I'm really concerned because I didn't have the best relationship with my girlfriend to begin with. She's a premed student at the same university. We started dating a few months ago and we had our fair share of issues. <br><br>I'm also a person of color and I'm a first gen student. I grew up in a poor neighborhood of Oakland. I'm currently on financial aid and have a scholarship. I'm not naive about the long term social benefits of education. <br><br>One day I told my girlfriend that I used ChatGPT 3.5 for a project. This was a class where the professor doesn't bother to show up to lectures and the material is boring. The final grade is determined 50% by an in class exam which is a joke and 50% by a group project which was also pretty easy. The final project is a presentation of some historical issue. I had to write a descriptive essay for this project which was graded separately. I had my group mates present while I was the one who wrote the essay. <br><br>I thought nothing of telling my girlfriend this information. She was infuriated. She went on and on about how I was ruining the education system and cheating. I told her that ChatGPT 3.5 is just a tool and that I was using it as assistance. I also told her that many other students are using it as well. This made her more mad. She claimed I was "trapping" her into being with a cheater. I told her that I don't view it as cheating. I'm not plagiarizing. I'm using it for ideas like I would with a textbook. I'm not copying and pasting. <br><br>After that she was acting cold towards me. I tried talking to her about it but she exploded and said that I was violating her trust by using ChatGPT 3.5. I told her that I was still going to use it regardless of how she felt about it. <br><br>After that we broke up. It was a very sad day because I had strong feelings for her. I couldn't imagine dating anyone better. I'm not sure if there's any way to work this out. I also can't imagine myself dating someone who doesn't use ChatGPT 3.5. I'm not saying that she's wrong for not using it. I just think it's an extremely useful tool for creating ideas and that it's beneficial for people who can't afford tutoring. <br><br>I'm going to miss her a lot.
