Hey everyone, and welcome back to my account. I am making a new thread in r/changemyview because I have a new opinion which I think you can change.

Here is my theory: In the coming decades, we will not see a human travel to another planet because there will be no economic reason to do so.

What I mean by this is that there will not be any room for profit on other planets. If a company were to send a person into space, that company would lose a significant amount of money because there are no resources there that we can't find here. Furthermore, the resources we do find there will not be usable for years to come so people investing in those ventures will not see their payoffs for years. What makes it even worse is the amount of resources we need to send one person to space

One of my classmates actually calculated all the math and figured out that for every person we send to space, we need about 20,000 pounds of food, water, and oxygen for a 6 month trip to mars, and a 6 month trip from mars. This is about 40,000 pounds per year, just for one person to travel to space. You can't have just one person going into space to set up a base or anything like that because it is just too expensive and too physically hard to send 40,000 pounds into space every year for every person that goes. It would require too many rockets and too much manpower and money and the investors wouldn't see any money for years to come.

I am completely willing to change my view here, and I want you guys to do that for me. Please propose your arguments and change my view!

Edit: Apparently I didn't respond to anyone. I apologize for this, I had no idea this blew up while I was at class. I am going to do my best to read through and respond to each and every one of you. Thank you so much for your support and welcome to the thread!!
