I worked for a major American airline for most of my life. 23 years to be exact. From a young girl, I always loved to travel, and I even used to get on flights just for the sake of being on a plane and going to another city for a night. It’s not hard to guess, I loved the thrill of flying.

I was a professional flight attendant. In charge of your safety in the skies. From all my years of flying, there were a series of flights that I’d love to share that gave me the creeps.

The first one that comes into mind happened on a night flight from New York to Miami. It was raining and the weather was pretty bad so we were required to do our safety demonstrations manually instead of digitally. One of my colleagues was doing the safety demonstration next to me when a gentleman next to him started to talk to us. For a brief second, I looked him in the eye and smiled, and he immediately got up from his seat and went into the bathroom. I assumed he had to go to the bathroom because of turbulence. A few seconds later, a flight attendant from the front of the plane came over and said, “this gentleman just said he needed to tell you something and came over and punched him in the face and busted his lip open.” He went on to say, “I was wrong about you, I knew you looked evil.” I assumed he was on something, called the pilots and informed them of the situation, and asked them if they could call TSA to come and escort him off the plane.

When we landed, they took him away and we had a meeting about what had transpired. Five other flight attendants said he was acting very strange. The last flight attendant to chime in said he tapped her on the shoulder from behind and said, “don’t worry about me, I’m just here to deliver a message.” I always wondered what made him say that to me, and I never saw or heard about him again.

My second story happened on a Flight from Chicago to Denver. A gentleman asked me what music we were playing over the speakers, and I told him it was a subscription to an airline music service. He asked me if I could turn it off, I said I couldn’t, and he went on to say, “ that song sounds like it’s saying ‘murder murder murder’ and he was acting a little erratic. I said, okay sir, I’ll turn it off. I went into the cockpit, turned off the music for the entire plane, and went back to ask him if he needed anything else. A few seconds later, a flight attendant working first class came to the back and said this same gentleman was yelling at her to “call the captain so he can stop the music that says murder murder murder.” She said he was harassing other passengers and was getting dangerous. I went to go inform the captain, but at that exact moment, the gentleman came into the galley and said, “I’m going to go tell the captain to call the captain so he can get off the plane that’s playing the song murder murder murder.” He went on to say, “I’m a former Marine, and you know what I’ll do if you don’t call the captain to stop the music.” I politely told him, “Sir you can’t go into the cockpit.” He said, “I will go into cockpit.” I said, “I’m sorry sir, you can’t go into the cockpit, it’s a hard no.” He cursed at me and said, “I will go in there and do what I have to do to stop the song.” I pulled out my phone and called the pilot and told him what he was saying. He told me to tell him to calm down or he’d call the captain and report him, and he’d be arrested. I told him what the pilot said, and he cursed at me again and raised his hand and I thought he was going to slap me so I called out for a male flight attendant nearby. All the passengers started to notice and started to panic. We emptied a nearby jumpseat and asked him to sit down and calm down. He calmed down and was actually a very nice guy and started to talk about how he’s a former Marine, and sometimes when he hears certain things it sets him off. He went on to say he’s bipolar and takes medication but sometimes the medication does not work. He apologized and started to cry. I could tell he was sincere about his apology, and sometimes people just lose it. We went on to have a great conversation and exchanged numbers and were actually friends for a while. Sometimes I think about him and wonder what happened to him and the other passengers who were on that flight. I can’t help but wonder if he’s okay.

My last story happened on a Red Eye flight from Miami to Brazil. It was a long flight and the weather was extremely bad. The flight was turbulent to the point where service was delayed. I was working in coach class in the back near the lavatories. The plane was on autopilot and the pilots were in the cockpit sleeping.

Around 3 am, one of the stewardesses from the front of the plane came over to me in tears. I asked her what was wrong and she couldn’t stop crying long enough to tell me. The passengers saw and started to worry, and I told them to go back to sleep and everything would be fine. I took this flight attendant to the back jump seat next to the lavatory so she could cry in peace. She finally composed herself and started to tell me what happened. She said the weather was bad so they were giving out snacks and waters, and one of the passengers who hasn’t made it to the bathroom yet started to hold themselves. She said he was a young kid and was acting very strange, and all of a sudden he got up and started running to the bathroom. She said, “I’m going to go check on him,” and started to follow him towards the lavatories. She said that as she was walking she was looking down at the floor and when she looked up, he was gone.

I was confused and asked her where he could have gone and she said she had no idea, and that the lavatory was empty. I asked her if she had told the pilots and she said she was terrified to go into the cockpit alone. I could tell she was terrified and I went to go check on the kid myself. I walked to all the bathrooms and none of them were occupied. I asked passengers if they had seen him and no one had. I started to feel a very strange and almost paranormal vibe and went to check the overhead compartments. All of his stuff was there, and he was nowhere to be found.

I was so terrified I couldn’t go into the cockpit alone so I went and got another flight attendant and we were all terrified together. We all went into the cockpit and woke up the pilots. They said, “what’s going on, is everything okay?” One of the flight attendants said, “this passenger went to the bathroom and disappeared,” and the pilot got very angry and said, “don’t be ridiculous, he’s on the plane.” It was a very tense situation and we were all in fear for the safety of the passengers. We all searched the entire plane and could not find him. The pilot got on the intercom and made an announcement asking him to come to his seat but no one ever showed up. No one ever found the young kid who went to the bathroom and never came back. We landing safely in Brazil.

When we landed, we emptied the plane and searched it from head to toe. TSA searched all the baggage holds and compartments and never found anything related to the kid who had disappeared. Passengers went on to their destination with a Terrifying story in their minds.

This flight really gave me the creeps and shook me to my core. I never heard of passengers If a plane can just vanish out of thin air. This flight left me with a lot of unanswered questions.

These are just some stories that I will never forget from my time in the skies.
