I think I’ve learned to never ever allow an 8 year old to customize their own laptop

My 8 year old recently asked about buying a SEEED Win11 Peasy. It’s a tiny laptop he could carry around, and he said he wanted it for school.

It’s also pretty cheap so to be fair, I didn’t think it’d be a big deal. He’s been saving up to buy himself a new gaming laptop and this would represent about 10% of that cost so I just said sure why not.

I asked him if he wanted a 256MB or 512MB version. He asked me to list the differences. I showed him the listed differences and told him I really couldn’t understand what any of it meant, but the more expensive one had a 4 core CPU whereas the cheaper one had a 2 core CPU.

He asked me if he could get the “custom” version. I said they didn’t have a custom version, but maybe the more expensive one was the “custom” one since it had more cores.

I don’t know if it’s a child’s sense of humor or what, but he didn’t mean that custom version. An 8 year old directed me to a website where they could “custom” the laptop, selecting literally everything. The total was in the $600s (which I was ok with, same as the price of an iPhone) but then I got to the accessories.

I thought I was going insane. He’s got like 10 accessories that make no sense to me. I’ve never heard of any of them and I’m a software engineer for a tech company.

At this point I’m just kind of curious to see what the hell he’s put together and what it’s actually going to do.
