How do you write distinctive dialogue for each character?

I'm trying to develop more distinct voices for my characters through their dialogue and I was looking for any tips or best practices people have. Are there any good ways to do this or any common techniques you've learned?<br><br>I tried reading my dialogue out loud as the characters and riffing off what comes to mind, but I don't want to just rely on improvisation or mimicry.
