By far the biggest challenge of my life is the transition from a large corporation to a small business.

I can't think of a reason to stay with the big company for the next few decades, and I'm probably the only one who can help me.

Hello. I am a 38-year-old man who works as a manager at one of the top five companies among many large corporations. I'm a layman when it comes to strategy, but my salary and bonuses are good (about $350,000 combined, and this is without counting stock options), and my work environment is good. I work only 40 hours a week and can take time off when I want, so I have a lot of free time to spend with my wife and children. I have no regrets working here, but I've always wanted to be my own boss. I have a passion for the IT industry, and I would like to transition from a large corporation to a small business.

I'm a complete layman in the IT industry, and from what I've heard, it's extremely difficult for an amateur to start a company. However, I've always thought that this is the only way for me to be my own boss, and it would be better for me and my family if I took a chance. For that reason, it's probably the best for me to do this, even if it fails.

In any case, I have a lot of savings, and I have stock options and many assets that I can cash in, so I'm fine financially even if I fail.

However, I'm worried about what kind of work I should do in a small business. I don't have a technical background or any experience working for a small business/startup. Everything I know now has no value outside of a large corporation.

Should I try to get an MBA? I know I became a manager at a big company, but I don't know the first thing about running a business. I've never even done a business case study.

I can probably do it at my age, but I'm not sure if I can learn from scratch. I would appreciate it if you could give me a realistic view of what it's like to become a beginner at 38 and what kind of struggles await.
