#Edit: I had no idea this would get so much attention. My wife and I just spent $3000 on school supplies for my students. I don't make a lot of money. How do you afford this shit?

Edit: I appreciate the awards, but I would rather you give them to some of the great teachers on this sub who don't complain as much as I do. Also, I can't believe nobody got the name reference.

I know it sounds insane, but we put $3000 on our credit card to buy school supplies. I know we won't be able to afford it, but I don't know what else to do. Many of my students are struggling to succeed without basic school supplies. I can't stand the thought of my kids being held back because of something as insignificant as not having a ruler or protractor. I have tried talking to the principal and the district people; they tell me that there is not enough money in the budget to buy supplies. I don't want to have to do this, but I just can't let the kids suffer for something they have no control over. It's not fair to them.

What do you guys do in this situation? I don't make a lot of money, and I know this is going to hurt us financially, but I want my kids to have every advantage possible. I just wish they would give us more money so we didn't have to sacrifice so much.
