Long time lurker, first time poster.

I'm an engineering student, so most of my classes are lectures. Usually in the morning I'm a little drowsy, so to help stay focused I write in chat. Most professors teach from a docx file. I write everything I see on the screen, with some added things I think are relevant.

I'd also do this to help me catch up if for some reason I have to tab out of class.

Anyway, I write in chat a lot and many of my classmates have mentioned it.

I use a folder for each class, and then a docx for each "week" of lecture. I make a blank copy of the material at the start of the year so I can just copy paste when a new week starts.

I use a word processor in a web browser because I can easily open the chat and jump between the two tabs. I haven't found a way to easily do this on the desktop app.

I don't know why this is relevant, but it takes me around 30 minutes to 1 hour to write up all the material for a "week" of lecture. This is also why I copy and paste the material - I haven't found an easier way to do it. When I paste I have to spend about 10 minutes or so reformatting it so it is easy to read.

I also take handwritten notes, and I usually only review my typed note on the day of a test. I'll read through them really fast and reformat a little bit if I need to.

I've found this helps with remembering things, like the order my classes are in. I can usually remember this pretty well due to the tab order in my browser.

I have considered using OneNote, but I like the ease of access. I don't like opening up the desktop app, because it can be distracting. I do a lot of web browsing, so I like the ease of access in a web browser.

I think OneNote would be good if I have a lot of handwritten notes - maybe next semester I need to do this. But I think I'd still like to do typed notes, because I write in paragraphs.

Anyway, onto the good stuff.

My grades have never been better! I'm doing really well this year. I've been doing this for about two years, and I can tell I've been retaining more information. I know I can always open up my notes and look if I need to. I'm not worried if I miss something - I can always go look.

I'm able to participate in class, with less effort. I also feel more confident in class.

I honestly think this has helped me be able to do better in my classes.

If anyone else does this - I'd love to hear your take! I don't know why I do it this way, but it works, and I'd love to hear about your methods.

TLDR: I write in chat for my classes, and it's really helped me.
