Do you ever worry your writing has no flavor?

I like to think of the act of writing as cooking. You take ingredients, put them in a pot, season them in a specific way, add some flavor, and serve them. That is the way I see writing to be. But there are times when I just have no flavor to add to my dish. All the ingredients are there, but my writing lacks a special touch.

I’m not entirely sure if this is a common issue among writers, but I hope this question can help me figure it out. When I write and I have no flavor to add to the dish, I go back to the basics of cooking. I flavor my ingredients by themselves. Then, I cook them in the same pot again. Sometimes this isn’t enough, and so I will just waste the ingredients in the trash. I throw them away because I can’t stand the thought of giving someone food that is equally as disgusting as I believe my writing to be.

This thought has been plaguing me for quite a while. It’s hard to make good things taste good. That is the predicament I find myself in when I write. The ideas are there, but they all taste the same. They all lack that special flavor. Sometimes you have to flavor the ingredients by themselves. Other times, you simply throw the whole dish in the trash.

Thank you for reading.
