What did everyday people think of people claiming the world was going to end in the year 1000?

It's a pretty well known fact that there were tons of people claiming the world was going to end in the year 1000. Some historians have said this was greatly exaggerated in recent history, but people claim it was a widespread thing. I'm wondering how everyday people thought of these claims. Were they widely believed? Were they laughed at? Is there historical evidence of this, I can't find much.
