My brother is a zombie when he does Xanax - it's terrifying how this drug is being normalized

I wasn't sure where else to post this about my brother. He's 25 years old and he's a heavy drinker.

When I was home over the holidays I discovered he was mixing his alcohol with Xanax and he would pass out in the bathroom or just go straight to bed and be asleep for 12+ hours. He would wake up and have no recollection of the events that happened. It's terrifying to see him like this.

When he does come "to" he just walks around like a zombie and has no idea what he did. He doesn't remember saying things he shouldn't have or how he hurt people by saying certain things in that state. It's very embarrassing and sad to see him act like this.

During Christmas dinner, he was arguing over how heart rate variability was dangerous and when he got upset he would get up and walk away and cry in the bathroom. And when he was done crying, he would just go to bed.

He has now begun to say that Xanax helps him through bad anxiety and he NEEDS it. It's ridiculous.

I understand that Xanax may have its place in the medical world but I don't think he needs it. He has been doing this never-ending cycle of drinking with Xanax for 9 years. He doesn't really work, has no hobbies, and I don't think he is clinically depressed or anything.

So I've been doing a lot of research about Xanax and am really concerned for his well-being. I don't even think he is healthy anymore. He is skin and bones, has almost no teeth left, and his health is in shambles.

I feel like his use is being normalized in part because of Tik Tok and the fact that his friends do this. They talk about it openly and give advice on how to get around taking the medication and they all just laugh about it.

And it's not like they are making YouTube videos about how Xanax messed up their life.... they just make videos about how Xanax is a great drug and this is all just anecdotal evidence of how "it works" for them.

I don't think he is going to hit rock bottom.... he is already dead inside and has been for years. How can I help him?
