DO NOT use the pomodoro timer

If you don’t know what it is it’s just 25 minutes of studying followed by a 5 minute break. On the 5th 5 minute interval you take a 15 minute break. I think this is horrible advice for so many reasons.

1. Constant breaks kill momentum. This is why everyone knows the saying “Don’t interrupt a panicking artist”. If you’re doing some difficult work you are completely focused on that specific thing. Constant breaks make you lose focus. It’s just like a child distracting you when you are doing something. Honestly, if you need a 5 minute break every 25 minutes, it’s because you can’t focus. You need to get better at focusing. Try training yourself not to break your focus in other stuff as well. For example if you’re watching a video on something educational, don’t pause it every 5 minutes and scroll through your phone. Just focus on the video and make sure you get the most out of it. This might help you in the long run and it might stop you from procrastinating so much.

2. You might run out of time. You might have 5 hours before the test. If you do 4 cycles of the pomodoro timer, you’ve studied for 100 mins or 1hr 40 mins and you took 35 minutes off. You’ve already lost almost an hour. What if you need to study for 4-5 hours? Do you really have the time to waste on breaks? Honestly, you don’t need to waste time on breaks. You can take a 10-15 minute break every 4-5 hours, and that will be enough to help you regain energy.

3. You can focus more. If you focus in one long session you can focus harder than if you constantly switch between being focused and not. This might deal with the reason why you need to take so many breaks. You can train yourself to focus harder. On average people can only focus for 45-50 minutes. But you can train yourself to focus harder. Try to take less breaks while doing everything and you might find yourself being more productive. For example if you’re doing a lot of paperwork for a job instead of doing a lot of paperwork, taking a break, doing a lot more paperwork, taking a break, try doing it all in one sitting. You might feel like you can’t do it, but believe me, you can. The most productive people are the people that can focus without taking much breaks.
