Why is Extreme Christianity so widely tolerated in the United States of America?

I’m British and in the UK Christianity isn’t a huge deal. But in America it seems so widespread, I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, because it’s a personal choice and all, but I don’t get why it’s so widespread in America and not so much in the rest of the world.
