Just had to do a massive survey for a medical device company and I'm a teacher.

This was a very long survey with lots of questions about how we diagnose, treat, and deal with a bacterial infection (UTI) in our students. At the end it asked about a potential device the company is developing.
The device would allow a school nurse to test for UTI in less than 2 minutes and can actually tell the type of bacteria and the severity of the infection. They were asking if this would be beneficial, if we would be willing to use it, what features we would want it to have, and what we would be willing to pay for it.
If this survey is a result of a new product just know that I am very much against it.
I (and most of the school nurses I know) cannot wait for all the kids to go home so we can get some actual work done. I’m sure we would all be ecstatic to add all the extra time and work we would need to do to test every kid that says they have to pee, for a potential UTI.
If the kids teacher didn’t send a note with them saying something like “Johnny peed himself because his bladder is weak” or “Susie just peed because she has a UTI” I would otherwise assume they are playing hooky and trying to go home. Honestly I’m not even sure I would do a pee test even if the teacher did send a note like that. Im not going to test every kid that says they need to go to the ER because of a UTI. We would have to add an extra nurse position to deal with all the kids wanting to be tested.
Some of the other notes I sent in were that a pee test takes more than just the 2 minutes it takes to get a reading, you need to take the kids temperature, get a sample of pee, take their vitals, get a full history, and a full description of symptoms. We need to ask the parents a ton of questions and then call the doctor. So it’s more like a 20-30 minute process. I also let them know that just because a test says they have a UTI, doesn’t mean we send them the doctor, we need culture tests and other tests to confirm before we send a kid to the doctor. I’m sure they would be interested in the insurance the district offers the nurses since we’re expected to do all this extra work and testing.
