My wife's dad asked for a paternity test

Once upon a time, I had a great little life. I'd married my high school sweetheart, soon after graduation in 2002. I managed to get a job at the local auto repair plant while Samantha had a steady job at a daycare center. We were doing ok for our 20 year old selves, and we were happy.

In 2006, Samantha got pregnant. The rest of that year and the beginning of 2007 was spent preparing for the baby. My job was ok but we were living paycheck to paycheck, I took on more hours and got a second job working security, to make sure everything was set when Samantha had the baby.

We had our baby girl, Rachel, on May 7th 2007. She was perfect. We moved into a two bedroom house, and things seemed to be on the upswing. I still worked the security job, but I'd moved on in the plant, to a better paying position, and life was good. Rachel was perfect, she was never fussy, and always had a smile on her face. She was a happy baby, and I was so glad to have her in my life.

Samantha's dad had never been the warmest to me. He never liked me for whatever reason, we didn't fight much but I could tell he didn't like me much. He'd been a coil miner for over 20 years before he'd retired. He was a very conservative man, and I was just a little too weird for him. I was a little too modern for his taste, and he'd stared to hate me.

Five years after Rachel was born, her grandad made a request. He wanted a paternity test done, to see if I really was Rachel's biological father. I was livid. He'd just accused me of cheating on him. I didn't raise a fuss, and I was polite but I really wanted to scream. I agreed, and we went to the lab. We didn't even wait for the results, we just dropped off the swabs and went our separate ways.

I'd just walked in the door when I got a call from Samantha.

"Hey, you won't believe what my dad said to me"

"Try me" I replied

"He said that if she's not your kid, you can just leave, pay child support, but leave"

"That's fucked up Samantha"

I hung up and went to the coil miner's house. I rang the bell but no on came to the door. I walked around to the back and saw that the door was open just a little bit. I pushed it open and called out.

"Hello, coil miner! You said if she wasn't mine I could just leave, well, its not my kid, so here I am"

The results had come back. 0% chance of Rachel being my kid. I wasn't pissed that Samantha had cheated, I just wanted to get away from here and never come back. I had been wronged, and I was going to leave the people who did this to me behind.

"She's not my kid, coil miner"

The back door creaked open, and there he was, my father in law. He was a fat, bald, red faced man with a big bushy beard. A few days worth of stubble covered his face.

"What the hell do you want Bob? I told you to leave"

"I'm not Bob, you fat, stupid man"

He cocked his head to the side, letting out a confused moan. I pulled out the paper.

"I'm not the father, coil miner"

He cocked his head to the other side, and let out a long, guttural groan. A cold chill ran down my back, as I realized something.

This wasn't Samantha's dad.

I backed away, as the man started to walk towards me. As I backed away, I saw Samantha and Rachel sitting in the living room, looking at me with twisted, demonic grins. I turned and ran, the man was gaining on me, as I reached for the door handle I felt a hand on my back.

Everything went black.

When I woke up, I was in a hospital. The first thing I remember was a deputy asking me questions, about how I had ended up in the hospital. I didn't remember, I didn't even remember my own name. They left not too long after that, but I was still confused. Why was I here? What had happened?

The next thing I remembered was a pretty lady with blonde hair and blue eyes walking into the room. She was followed by a little girl with short blonde hair and big green eyes.

"Bob, is that you in there?" the lady asked

"Yes, its me" I replied

"Who is my daughter" the little girl asked

"You're my daughter Rachel"

The woman and girl both stared at me, with shocked looks on their faces.

"I knew it was you" Rachel said

The woman looked at Rachel and back to me.

"Let's get out of here, shall we?" she said

I nodded, and stood up. The woman and girl both helped me out of the hospital, and into a car. We drove in silence, until we reached a small house. It wasn't a great house, it was rickety and falling apart.

As we stepped inside, I started to remember what had happened. Samantha's dad had asked for a paternity test, it had come back 0%, and then things just went black.

The woman turned to me.

"You're staying with us now Bob"

"Who are you?" I asked

"I'm Samantha, and this is our baby girl Rachel"

I shook my head, trying to get my memories to come back but they wouldn't. I tried again and again, but I just couldn't remember.

"I've missed you so much Bob" Rachel said

I reached out to hug Rachel, but as I did, her face contorted. She let out a shrill screech as her face twisted into a grotesque mask. I backed away, and bumped into a wall behind me.

As I turned, I saw a picture of a happy family. A mom, a dad, and little girl sat on a beach. The parents were holding hands, and the little girl was smiling.

I recognized the mom and little girl as Samantha and Rachel. But who was the dad?

I looked closer. I had never seen the man before, I had never seen myself before.

This man was me. I stared into the eyes of my doppelganger, as my memories started to come back.

The paternity test. My argument with Samantha's dad. Waking up in the hospital.

I stumbled out of the house, as my memories rushed back. I didn't stop running until I was back at my car. I had left my phone at the coil miner's house, so I just kept driving. I didn't stop until I was over 400 miles away from Samantha and Rachel.

I stopped at the first hotel I saw, and went to sleep. When I woke up, I went to a lab to get another paternity test. I had to know, if Rachel was my daughter.

I left the lab, and just wandered. I was lost in thought. Had Samantha cheated on me? Had she lied to me? But how had all of this happened? How had Samantha and Rachel found me? What happened to the coil miner?

My questions were answered, when I got the results.

I was not Rachel's father.

I didn't know if this was a relief or not. I had grown to love that little girl, but she wasn't really mine. Did I tell her? Did I just let her keep thinking I was her dad? I didn't know.

I decided to get some more answers. I went back to the coil miner's house, and talked to Samantha. We sat on the back deck, and talked for hours.

She told me that Rachel wasn't my kid, she was a gift from her dad. Her dad had given her the gift of motherhood, and Rachel was only mine because she had told me so. She said that she was sorry I had to leave, but she'd changed her mind.

I stood up and walked away. I left her and Rachel, and never saw either of them again.
