When I was in 6th grade at a magnet middle school in Brooklyn, a kid in my class had stolen my assignment and the teacher had caught them with it and thought I was the one who had done it. I was a model student at that school and getting in trouble at a magnet school meant your parents were called in for a disciplinary hearing, a mark on your permanent record, and potential expulsion that would go on your record for high school admissions.

I kept telling everyone it wasn’t me, but they didn’t believe me. Even my parents thought I was lying at first. Getting caught cheating in 6th grade is weird because it’s not like anyone expects anyone to remember anything they learned in middle school, but I was worried mostly because I wanted to go to one of the better public high schools and didn’t want to have it on my permanent record, I didn’t know if colleges would care.

So a few days later my mom came to school for the disciplinary hearing. It was morning, and she was tired, and she had just woken up when they called her because she works nights. I don’t know why they didn’t give us more than a couple hours notice.

They were saying really mean things to me, and that I should be expelled, and I kept saying it wasn’t me because I’m a goody and I know I wouldn’t cheat. I was starting to cry in the meeting. My mom was pissed off, and she called bullshit on everything they were saying and told me to shut up and stop crying. When we got out of the meeting she took me aside and told me to tell her the truth and she would help me, but I kept saying I hadn’t done it.

She didn’t believe me and thought I was trying to lie to save my own ass, but I think she could tell I wasn’t lying, and she told me she would go to bat for me. So we went back in the meeting and she started going off on the principal and the teacher and all the administrators and secretaries in there about how I was a model student and how I would never cheat. They were starting to back down, and my mom was getting mad at them because they were trying to say it wasn’t a big deal and they didn’t want to expel me, and my mom said that wasn’t what she wanted, that I really didn’t cheat and she wanted it cleared off my record.

Finally the teacher admitted that it actually was another kid who had cheated, and he had taken my assignment and tried to say it was his. So my mom was pissed and said, “Well, he’s the one who should be expelled.” My mom doesn’t usually go off like that.

I felt bad for the other kid, because I didn’t want him to get expelled. I was just glad I was off the hook.

My mom and dad both have a lot of attitude, but they’re not usually confrontational, so it’s cool that my mom was on my side.

Sorry if this is rambly, I’m just in a contemplative mood.
