How close do you think we are to seeing the development of augmented reality contact lenses?

I am currently doing some world building for a novel, and I am curious about the near future of augmented reality contact lenses. I am expecting them to be developed in the near future(5-10 years), but how close do you think they really are to full development and mass production. I am also curious to know if anyone has any thoughts as to how they may be used in the future.
