Meghan Markle and Harry’s Oprah Interview might be the biggest blow to the monarchy since the execution of Charles I

The British monarchy has survived a lot of shit throughout the centuries. It has survived beheadings, assassinations, war, an English civil war, its Catholic/Protestant schism, and its colonial misadventures that left the world the USA and Ireland as legacies.<br><br>So when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle gave an interview to Oprah Winfrey, to say the least it was a bad PR day for the monarchy.<br><br>Meghan revealed that there were senior members of the royal family that were concerned about the skin color of her baby, that she was not getting any support for her mental health problems, that she was being hounded by the press, that the press was not being held to account for printing utter lies about her, and that there was a general lack of support from the royal family.<br><br>Now of course the royal family is staying silent. However things might not turn out so well for them. It seems that Meghan and Harry might have broken the camel’s back, especially with the younger generations.<br><br>The royal family might not survive this because they are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. If they stay silent, they look like they have something to hide and this whole saga might just get worse. On the other hand, if they decide to respond they risk making the situation worse by giving oxygen to a fire that they cannot extinguish.<br><br>So why is this happening? After all the royal family has been around longer than anyone can remember.<br><br>The problem is that Meghan Markle is not like any other royal bride before her. She is a self-made woman. In other words, Meghan does not need the royal family. And she is not going to be held to account by the royal family’s unwritten rules, like other generations did before her.<br><br>Meghan Markle is a highly educated woman who has worked her whole life to get to where she is. She has worked as an actress and worked in humanitarian organizations. She is also half-black and if anyone thinks that the British press was not going to go after that they are delusional. Of course, racists are going to go after her because she is black and a woman.<br><br>Now, we might say that the press has always gone after the royal family, but they have not gone after them before with the ferocity that they have gone after Meghan Markle. They have gone after her because she is a self-made woman, a woman of color, and a recent addition to the royal family.<br><br>The problem is that Meghan Markle is not going to stand for it. And ultimately that may be the monarchy’s undoing. So now they have two choices.<br><br>1. They can double down and become even more secretive and opaque, or<br>2. They can change the way they do business and accept that they are not a clan and that Prince Harry is not some kind of disobedient teenager that has thrown a tantrum.<br><br>If they choose 1 they are in danger of losing whatever legitimacy they have left.<br><br>If they choose 2 they may have a chance of surviving into the future, but they would also have to accept that Prince Harry is an adult and he wants to live his life the way he wants to.<br><br>The problem is that the British monarchy is an institution that is built on a lot of unsaid rules. There are rules about how you dress, how you speak, where you live, where you go out, and how you interact with the press. And Prince Harry and Meghan Markle broke most of them.<br><br>And that is what this whole saga is about. The royal family is not used to this kind of behavior from royal family members. But Meghan Markle is not your average royal wife, because she has broken every rule in the book. She is a self-made woman; she is not some aristocrat or upper-class woman that has been raised to be a royal wife. She is an American, an actress, a woman of color, divorced, and older than Harry. <br><br>So yeah, this is not going to end well for anyone.<br><br>Edit: Thanks for the rewards.
