I settled in to my seat, placed my order with the flight attendant, and then I reached for the pair of earbuds that were hanging on the screen in front of me. The flight attendant happened to be standing by me in the process of pouring my soda, and so she spoke to me as I reached for the buds.

“Not going to listen to the safety briefing?”

I looked down at her, and then over at the screen I was watching.

I was watching the safety briefing.

“I hate to break the news to you, but there isn’t really a point in watching the safety briefing these days, is there?”

I know the look she gave me meant that I had really pissed her off, and maybe she was pissed that I had called attention to the fact that commercial flights hadn't really ended since the beginning of...it all. But she just dropped the bottle of soda, snatched the buds hanging off the screen, and returned to the cart she was pushing down the aisle.

She never really looked at me again, but as she was walking away she mumbled something at me. I didn't know what it was at first, but it sounded like she might have said, “You don’t know what you need.”

I shrugged it off and moved on. The flight prepared for takeoff and in a short amount of time we were in the air headed for home.

I ordered a meal and a drink, and when the flight attendant came by, I asked her if she had heard my question.

She jerked around and looked at me as if she had been startled.

“Did you hear my question?” I repeated.

“Oh, did you hear me say something back to you?” She asked.

She was agitated, so I decided not to push the question further. I just shook my head no, and took my meal from her. I watched as she walked away from me, then I reached across and unwrapped the utensils that were provided with the meal.

There was a fork, knife, spoon, and then a napkin.

I started to eat, but after a few bites I remembered the flight attendant dropping the napkin that was with my meal.

Was that napkin a bad omen? I thought so.

I reached into the pack holding the utensils, and unwrapped and used all my silverware before reaching for the napkin.

I ate clean, but as I finished the meal, I could feel a cold breeze blowing along my arms. I looked over and a flight attendant was standing next to me, her eyes obscured by shadow. She reached forward and wiped a smudge of food from my face.

“If you don’t know what you need, then what’s the point of eating?” She asked.

I doubled over in pain, and when I came to, I was buckled in my seat, covered in a sheet. Everyone around me was dead, and the flight was empty.

I've never eaten since.
