Home invasion at age 6

I remember the night like it was last night, and it was from when I was 6 years old. I’m a guy, and if I recall correctly it was 1977. This was up in Maine. When I was 6 I had to share a bedroom with my younger brother, I believe he was 3. He was an asshole to deal with. We shared a bunk bed, and I always got the bottom one (yes, it’s better than the top one!).

We lived in a ranch house, and our bedroom was at the front of the house, closest the the street. At about 3 am I woke up to a noise coming from outside. I don’t know why I woke up to it, because up until then I was (and still am) a heavy sleeper. I remember it being very dark, except for the moonlight which illuminated the entire room. It was like a spotlight shining down on my brother and me.

I remember seeing a person peering (like a creeper) into our window, and a chill ran down my back. I had no idea what to do. I whispered to my brother “Don’t make any noise. Be very quiet.” The creeper was trying to open up the screen window. Now, my parents were never good at Szellking our windows shut. Meaning you couldn’t open the screen window up unless you lifted it up at an angle. It took the creeper a few minutes to figure this out.

Being only 6 and 3 my brother and I didn’t understand we should have run for help. So we just laid in our bed hoping he would give up and go away. He eventually opened up the screen window and tapped on the glass window. It wasn’t painted shut, so all he had to do was push the window up. He did so slowly. He opened up the window, and I don’t know what else to explain other than to say he popped his upper body up and into the room.

To this day I’m not sure how he did it. I never saw his legs, and I don’t know how he was supporting himself, other than with his hands and arms. He stood there for a moment. I could see him clearly thanks to the moon. I could see the heat coming off of him. It was cold that night and I could see his breath escaping his mouth.

My brother and I were frozen in fear. The creeper eventually jumped down. His knees cracked when he hit the floor, so I assume he was older. I don’t know why, but when he jumped down he kept popping his head up over the windowsill to look at us. It was as if he was saying, “I know you can see me. Don’t move.”

He eventually crawled out, taking the screen with him. It took him some time to get out, but he was gone. My brother and I broke down in fear and started crying. We ran out of our bedroom and down the hall to my parents room. Shaking them and telling them what happened.

My father got up and looked through the entire house. No one was there. He called the cops and they came. They walked the entire house but found nothing. They looked for evidence outside and eventually found a smashed window screen laying in a ditch near our house. We moved the next year. I held on to that night for all these years.

I don’t know why he didn’t take us. I don’t know what he would have done. I don’t know anything but I never saw who it was.

Creep, if I ever find out who you are I’ll fucking kill you.
