As a policewife and a nurse I feel like I have a unique perspective on this.

Defunding the police will not only cost hundreds of thousands of trained police officers their jobs, it will also affect the people who get paid to train, dispatch and pay those officers.

I don’t know if they realize that the police training facilities will also get defunded, so when they do reform the police force, they won’t have anybody to train the new officers.

Defunding the police means that we can’t pay the people who do their jobs anymore.

And then there’s the hospitals...

Please think about all the nurses, residents, doctors, athletic trainers, RTs, techs, food service, housekeeping, secretaries, security guards, blood collection people, lab workers, janitorial crews etc, etc, etc that you employ at almost every hospital, who spend hours working on people who’ve been shot.

When their tax money gets taken away from funding the police, it will get taken away from funding the hospitals. Do you have any idea what it costs to do trauma surgeries all day?

The helicopter services and search and rescue will also get defunded.

Those search and rescue plans are incredibly expensive. There are also a lot of search and rescues that require them to fly out to remote locations to rescue these people.

Yeah, I’ve been to those calls as a nurse and I’ve seen those bills. It’s a lot.

And then there’s the helicopter and operating costs for the helicopter rescues.

You can’t have the police without the hospitals.

We need to support our police by reforming it, not defunding it.

I’m not saying they all deserve to be defunded, but I agree that there are a lot of officers who need reform.

I’ve seen it myself, and my husband has seen it himself.

But there are a lot of hard working cops, including my husband.

I’ve seen the hard working calls he’s gone on, from domestic calls to suicides to murders to accidents.

He’s been shot at multiple times.

He’s been assaulted multiple times, including being stabbed in the head by a mentally ill woman under the influence of illegal drugs.

He’s done CPR on dead babies and children at accident scenes.

He’s had to sit there and watch people he loves die, all because someone else made a mistake.

I’ve been lucky enough to be with him for 11 years now.

For 11 years now, I have not been able to sleep until he gets hurt.

For 11 years now, I have been dreading getting that knock on the door, telling me that he’ll never be coming home.

I dread the day I have to tell our daughter that daddy will never be coming home.

I dread the day we have to live on a significantly smaller pension after he gets murdered in the line of duty.

I dread the day our daughter asks me why people hate her daddy so much, even though he literally risks his life every day to protect her and our community.

So let’s please reform, not defund.

Even if you think that the police are all bad and they’re all out to get you, please consider Reform and not defund.

For my daughter’s sake.

For all the little girls sakes whose daddies are police officers.

And for all the little boys and girls whose daddies are nurses, doctors, residents, techs, athletic trainers, etc, etc, etc.

Or anyone else who works at a hospital.

Let’s please figure out a way to reform things instead of just defunding everything.

We need police to protect our communities.

We need police to protect hospital staff from drug seekers and psychotic outbursts from acute mental illnesses or drug addictions.

We need police to keep us safe.

We need police to protect us from drug seekers.

I’ve seen police get called on countless mental health patients who can’t afford to pay their bill, so they call 911 after their primary care doctor refuses to fill their klonopin script. Or they call 911 to get taken to another hospital because we can’t afford to pay their bill.

Let’s please figure out a way to reform instead of defund the police.

For all the little girls like mine.

And all the people who work hard to save someone’s life after they’re shot.

Or all the people who get shot by the police.

#Reform
