Has anyone ever won an argument?

First post here, I’m an old academic and starting to wonder if there is ever an effective way to have a discussion with people. <br><br>I’m not necessarily talking about subjects like philosophy and religion, but everyday topics such as politics, the weather, local news, etc. <br><br>I came to this idea a few days ago after an argument with a family friend about a new local development; I was in favor, he was against. Through various discussions I’ve come to some form of consensus that the best idea is to live and let live, but that doesn’t ever seem to happen. <br><br>Would be grateful if people could share their own experiences with the subject or any ideas.
